More than 200 people have been included in a terror watch list created by the Victoria police, as community concerns over a possible terror attack in Victoria still remains strong. The people who are on the list have the capability of planning a terror attack, according to the Victoria police.

Assistant Commissioner Ross Guenther said on Saturday that community tensions regarding a possible terror attack in Victoria have heightened following the series of terror attacks that have been taking place across the world.

Guenther is leading the new counter-terrorism team of Victoria which will overlook critical areas of intelligence, prevention and investigation with specialist response officers. Guenther and his team will be keeping watch on a number of people, some of whom are from a younger age group.

“You can imagine that post-Paris events, there's heightened community anxiety, and, as a result of that, the number of calls we receive through the national security hotline see an increase and spikes along the way,” Sky News quoted him telling reporters on Saturday. “This generates greater need for investigation from our behalf. Some of it is about community reassurance, and some of it leads to us following through by means of a comprehensive investigation.”

The long terror watch list comes a day after federal and state leaders agreed to detain terrorists indefinitely even after they have served their jail terms. As per the new laws, which are expected to be in place by March, the judge presiding the matter would be required to determine whether the inmate is any longer a threat to the public.

Guenther said that the surveillance of radical behaviour has increased over the past five to ten years, especially after the vicious Paris attacks.
