Twitter, the popular microblogging Web site, has just released its top Twitter hashtag trends of the year. Check out the most popular tweets of 2013 including the Boston Marathon bombings (#BostonMarathon), 5-year-old leukemia survivor Miles Scott's wish of becoming Batkid, with San Francisco used as Gotham City (#SFBatkid) and the birth of the Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton's son Prince George (#RoyalBaby).

According to Twitter, the annual Year on Twitter is a compilation of popular tweets and hashtags gathered from the company's year-end stats.

"To mark the end of the year, we delved into the data to create our annual 'Year on Twitter' roundup," reads a statement from Twitter's official blog.

Aside from that data, it also includes the most re-tweeted Tweets which are called the Golden Tweets (#GoldenTweets), such as Glee actress Lea Michele's tweet about co-star and boyfriend Cory Monteith's death on July 29, 2013 at 10:04 AM accompanied by a picture of the two of them together. It reportedly peaked at 408,000 retweets.

Meanwhile, the shocking news of "Fast and Furious" actor Paul Walker's tragic car crash with friend Roger Rodas was one of the most talked about in Twitter. The confirmation of his death from Walker's team was retweeted by a lot of people as well. It peaked at 400,000 retweets. Check it out below:

On a lighter note, popular British boy band One Direction's numerous tweets were also retweeted by their fans worldwide, especially Niall Horan's tweet about his 20th birthday on Sept. 12, 2013. According to Twitter, it peaked at 375,000 retweets.

Tweets about the Super Bowl XLVII which was held on Feb 3, 2013 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana (LA) reached up to millions. In fact the #SB47 hashtag was included in 24.1 million Tweets in 2013!

#Oscars

This hashtag was used in 8.9 million Tweets about the 85th Academy Awards which was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California (CA) on Feb 24, 2013. Tweets about the Oscars included the nominees, winners, highlights, celebrity sightings and dresses.

#bostonstrong

This hashtag about the Boston Marathon bombings (two pressure cooker bombs exploded) which occurred on April 15, 2013, was used by more than 27 million people in their Tweets about it.
