Nintendo has officially announced that it will release the SNES Classic Edition in September, ahead of its supposed pre-Christmas release. The remake of the Super Nintendo is set to bring back lots of awesome retro memories to fans of the original console, just like 2016’s NES Mini. It’s a little disappointing, though, that the new system has fewer games than last year’s console.

It’s official, retro gamers. Nintendo is set to launch the remake of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in September. It was previously rumoured to have a pre-Christmas release. Nobody saw the early launch coming, not that anybody’s complaining.

The original console was launched in Australia and New Zealand back in 1992. The SNES introduced fans to some of the most legendary video games ever made, including “Super Metroid,” “The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past,” “Super Mario World,” “Super Mario Kart” and “F-Zero.”

The petite version of the SNES Classic comes with 21 pre-installed games, which is somewhat disappointing since the Nintendo Mini boasts of 30 classics. But just like its predecessor, it can be easily connected to an HD TV by using the bundled HDMI cable. Here is the miniature console’s complete list of games:

  1. “Contra III: The Alien Wars”
  2. “Donkey Kong Country”
  3. “EarthBound”
  4. “Final Fantasy III”
  5. “F-Zero”
  6. “Kirby Super Star”
  7. “Kirby’s Dream Course”
  8. “The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past”
  9. “Mega Man X”
  10. “Secret of Mana”
  11. “Star Fox”
  12. “Star Fox 2”
  13. “Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting”
  14. “Super Castlevania IV”
  15. “Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts”
  16. “Super Mario Kart”
  17. “Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars”
  18. “Super Mario World”
  19. “Super Metroid”
  20. “Super Punch-Out!!”
  21. “Yoshi’s Island”

“Star Fox 2” is the sequel to the original intergalactic game “Star Fox” (originally launched as “Starwing” in Australia and New Zealand). “Star Fox 2” has never been previously released, so it somehow makes up for the short list of games. It was developed during the Super Nintendo era, so it should be as retro as retro gets.

The SNES Classic Edition will be available in Australia on September 30 for AU$119.95. Included in the package are one HDMI cable, one USB power cable and two wired controllers. The Nintendo USB AC Adapter, which is also compatible with the NES Mini, will also be made available on the same day for AU$19.95. The Super Nintendo Mini will be released in North America on September 29 with a US$79.99 price tag.
