'Suicide Squad' Aussie actor Jai Courtney got 'jacked' for role; Crazy antics off-cam detailed

“Suicide Squad” seemingly has gone off to a rocky start for most of its viewers. Though the film may still be an uncertain triumph for now, Australian actor Jai Courtney has certainly achieved his physical and mental goals along the way.

Courtney’s casting for Digger Harkness or Captain Boomerang may be one decision that fans have seen to be rather fitting for “Suicide Squad,” especially with the actor’s credentials.

The actor said the role requires certain physical looks, he needed to keep up, Coach Mag reports. Coming from “Terminator: Genisys,” in which the actor had to drop a notable amount of weight, he was pleased to do the opposite for “Suicide Squad."

“The beauty of this movie was that I was told I could finally gain some weight,” Courtney explained. “So I went from about 190lb [86kg] in 'Terminator' to 230lb [105kg] for 'Suicide Squad.' So for me the physical preparation was massive. We’d all train together. We did martial arts training together from the very beginning. Will Smith and I would roll on the mats doing jiu jitsu, I was lifting weights with Joel Kinnaman, and Jay Hernandez and I got the gloves on every day and we’d spar.”

In terms of mental training, Courtney added that he and his co-actors underwent sparring sessions to get them into perfect condition. The sessions worked them out physically and would sometimes get heated..

Training is not the only fun that the “Suicide Squad” cast experienced. According to Independent, Courtney once chased director David Ayer butt-naked all over the set. The director was able to escape, giving the witnessing co-actors a great laugh. At some point, it was believed that this approach aided Courtney in the confidence and method acting he needed to pull off the the crazy role of Captain Boomerang.

“Suicide Squad” is now showing in Australia.
