The congested prison in Honduras once again met a tragic incident that killed hundreds of prisoners. A raging fire took hold while several inmates are trapped inside their cells screaming for help.

Tuesday night when the fire started sweeping through Honduran jail. Other inmates managed to escape, while many remained trapped and screaming inside their cells. According to a few survivors, people who were left inside were holding on to each other with extreme fear on their faces while the flames began swallowing them up.

Danelia Ferrera, a senior officer at the attorney general's office, said there were about 359 prisoners killed during the incident.

Burnt and unrecognizable bodies were discovered inside cells when the staff started to check the area. To identify the dead bodies, DNA and dental records will be used.

According to the police, one woman died while staying overnight at the detention center. The rest were identified as inmates. The police said a few could have escaped.

The country presently has 24 overloaded punitive facilities with a capacity of 8,000 inmates, which are actually taking hold of around 13,000.

The United Nations declared Honduras to have the highest rate of murder in the world. With the intense drug trafficking and brutal street gangs, clashes and riots have become a typical scene in the place.

This was Honduras' third major prison fire since 2003.

The Comayagua prison director was suspended together with the national prison system head to conduct a comprehensive investigation. They have to determine whether the fire was started intentionally or if it was just an accident.

Meanwhile, police were trying to control relatives of prisoners who were trying to get into the crime scene. Many became aggressive and started throwing stones to police, who responded by shooting tear gas and firing shots into the air.
