Manchester United will be relieved to not have spent £42 million after failing to sign Arturo Vidal this season. The Juventus midfielder aggravated his knee injury in the past few days and is reported to have suffered a serious one this time around.

The £42 million deal collapsed after Louis van Gaal had raised serious concerns over the knee injuries of the Chilean midfielder prior to the World Cup in Brazil. It is now believed that the United manager was right in withdrawing the deal as Vidal's knee condition deteriorated at an alarming rate. Vidal has been negotiating with the team throughout the entire transfer season. However, the transfer deal collapsed at the last minute.

The 27-year-old Chilean is currently in Miami to participate in friendly matches against Mexico and Haiti. The news around Chile is that Vidal has broken down during a routine training session. His injury seems to be serious this time. The knee injury has troubled the midfielder throughout his career. At present, it seems that Vidal will be needing a surgery for a long-term relief.

The news came as a great blow not only to Chile's national team, but also to Juventus. Juventus, which is chasing a consecutive fourth 'Serie A' title this season, will definitely be distressed to hear about the defender's serious injury. It has already lost its playmaker, Andre Pirlo, for a month and will have to use some of its bench strength to fill the void.

On the other hand, van Gaal, who has been constantly criticized for being sluggish in the transfer window, is expected to be praised this time at making a clever move for the team. The United manager has been known for employing ingenious tactics in calling for substitutions and devising formations. Now, he is applauded for using his cunning ability in the transfer window.

In another report, Paul Scholes criticised van Gaal for signing Daley Blind. Despite this indubitably beneficial prediction, the United manager has yet to register a win in the premier. Moreover, van Gaal still faces questions regarding the strength of his defense line. The team has lost to two of the weakest teams in the circuit, gaining another defeat against MK Dons recently.
