Liverpool supporters called for Brendan Rodgers' ouster on social media after the Merseyside outfit failed to get past the group stages in the Champions League on Wednesday (AEST).

The Reds started the game flat, able to create only a single chance in the first-half while the visitors bombarded them with shots on goal, one of which was Fabian Frei's attempt that managed to find the back of the net, to the shock of the home fans.

They played better after the break and got one in through a masterful Steven Gerrard free-kick, but the one-goal cushion by the opposition proved one-too-many for the hosts. Substitute Lazar Markovic took an early bath after players from the Swiss club got to his nerve.

While the manager can only do so much, fans on Twitter were of the view that Rodgers should be held primarily responsible for failing to maximise top-class talents at his disposal.

Surely the time has come? He's maxed out his potential as a manager. European naivity. Awful. #LFC #RodgersOut #HAHA pic.twitter.com/UxdCQdfSTB

I won't tweet #RodgersOut because i know its going to happen. You can't spend £120M & finish 9th, i believe the term is underperformance. — SherlinLFC (@SherlinLFC) December 9, 2014
