A 29-year-old gunman, identified as Vincente David Montano, has been shot dead by the police at a movie theatre in Nashville, Tennessee in the U.S. The man was reportedly wearing a surgical mask and carrying a hatchet and a gun. No cases of injuries have been reported except for the suspect and 3 other people.

The gunman broke into the Carmike Hickory 8 cinemas on Bell Road, where “Mad Max - Fury Road” was running. Public information officer Don Aaron said the man first fired at a police officer, which prompted him to fire back, before a SWAT team moved in and exchanged fire. The gunman escaped through the back door of the theatre, only to be confronted by more police who shot and killed him.

"The actions of that first officer who went in the theatre to engage this individual may well have saved multiple individuals inside that theatre," Aaron said during a press conference. Skynews reported that the police were called in the afternoon to take the gunman down at the theatre where around 20 people were watching the movie.

According to Yahoo News, the suspect was carrying a backpack which contained a strange device appearing to be a fake bomb. It is said that Montano sprayed two women with pepper spray and had apparently unleashed the thick chemical spray throughout the theatre. According to Aaron’s accounts, the policemen had to wear gas masks to get into the theatre.

Nashville fire department spokesperson Brian Hass confirmed in a statement that two people have been hurt by the pepper spray and one by the hatchet, adding that the situation could have turned out much worse.

It is the second attack in a movie theatre in the recent times, while the first one in Lafayette, L.A., left 2 people dead and 9 others injured. Both shootings took place even as jurors in Colorado indicated that James Homes, the 27 year old man who was responsible for the 2012 shooting at a movie theatre in Aurora might be bestowed with death penalty.
