Detroit rapper Eminem released his new track “Phenomenal” on June 1, Monday. The song was recorded specifically for the boxing film “Southpaw,” which was directed by Antoine Fuqua starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams and Forest Whitaker.

Eminem incorporated his signature pop culture references in the “Phenomenal” lyrics. One line goes, “Now what you do is put the match to the charcoal fluid/ Put a spark to it like Martha Stewart barbecuing,” referring to the businesswoman who founded Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

Released by Shady Record, the “Southpaw” soundtrack was executive produced by Eminem. The entire album will be released as the boxing film hit theatres on July 24.

Written by Kurt Sutter, “Southpaw” features boxing trainer Titus "Tick" Wills played by Whitaker helping Billy Hope, a boxer played by Gyllenhaal looking to rise up again after his wife played by McAdams was accidentally killed during an altercation with another boxer.

Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal will grace the cove of Esquire UK magazine’s July issue, in which he promoted “Southpaw.” In an interview with the magazine, the actor explained how priorities shifted and his perspective changed.

Gyllenhaal said he woke up one day and he was not in the right room. He compared the situation with the lyrics of Talking Heads 1980 hit “Once In A Life Time,” which has lyrics saying, “This is not my beautiful house, and you may tell yourself, this is not my beautiful wife.”

According to Gyllenhaal, he decided to change his life when he moved from Los Angeles to New York, where he pursued theatre, a decision he called “a grown-up thing.” He started as an indie film actor before becoming a mainstream heartthrob famously known for his gay role in “Brokeback Mountain” opposite the late Heath Ledger.

Joining Gyllenhaal and McAdams in the “Southpaw” cast are 50 Cent, Rita Ora, Beau Knapp, Skylan Brooks, Victor Ortiz, Miguel Gomez, John Cenatiempo, Dominic Colon, David Whalen, Zachary Davis Brown, Oona Lawrence, Naomie Harris,Grace Marie Williams and Clare Foley, among others.

Available on iTunes, the “Southpaw” soundtrack “Phenomenal” was produced by DJ Khalil. It was also published on YouTube on June 2, Tuesday, as a five-minute audio. Listen to the new Eminem song here:
