Cristiano Ronaldo has added to his list of record breaking achievements at Real Madrid as he scored his 300th goal for the club against Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday night. Madrid won the match 2-0 to stay four points behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race.

Ronaldo joined the club from Manchester United in 2009 for a then record-breaking fee of £8o million, and the fact that he scored his 300th goal for the club in just the sixth year since his arrival shows how record-breaking his career has been to date in Madrid. It means an average of 50 goals per season for the Portuguese superstar. He joins club legends Raul and Alfred di Stefano in scoring 300 goals for the club, in just 288 appearances.

Stefano managed 308 goals over the course of 11 years and 392 games while Raul took 16 years and 741 games to score a club-record 323 goals. That number should be well within reach for Ronaldo next season. Seven games remain in La Liga, along with the Champions League quarterfinals.

Ronaldo’s 300th goal came against a resilient Rayo Vallecano side who gave Los Blancos a real run for their money. They dominated possession and even attempted more shots than the defending Europea champions, but had no goal to show for their effort. The Portuguese forward finally broke the deadlock after a clinical header from Dani Carvajal’s boss. He then set up James Rodriguez’s goal barely five minutes later to seal the win.

"What [Ronaldo] wants is to always score goals. At 2-0 up he was pressing their defenders. He always wants more, that is why he is so great. He is an example for all kids and other professionals, with his character and ambition, which all the greats have", former Real striker Emilio Butragueno said to Futbol.as.com.

After a recent slump, Ronaldo came back strong to score five goals in a 9-1 drubbing of Granada last weekend, and continued his good form Wednesday night. Real will be hoping he carries on the good form as they seek to overcome Barcelona’s four point lead at the top of the table.
