Four people were killed and hundreds of cars fell into a river Sunday after a bridge in Borneo collapsed, Indonesian authorities said.

Ninenteen people were also injured and an undetermined number of people were missing after the 720-metre bridge resembling the San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge collapse on the Mahakam river in the Kutai Kartanegara district of East Kalimantan.

Some 60 rescue divers pulled 39 people from the river and continue to search for survivors and 22 missing people believed trapped underneath the debris. Others who fell into the 50-metre deep river swam a few hundred metres to shore.

A steel support cable of the bridge snapped while being repaired caused the collapse of the bridge, disaster management agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, according to AFP. However, an investigation is being conducted to verify this and establish the cause of the accident.

The bridge was built in 2002 and links the towns of Tenggarong and Tenggarong Seberang. Ferries will temporarily transport people between the two towns.

The Mahakam Bridge in East Kalimantan resembles the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
