Most smartphones in the market now sports a full HD 1,080p display including those with small screens. Manufacturers make phones with 2K Quad HD that would be 2,560 x 1,440 screens. This is an unnecessary display feature for small screen smartphones. However, most people when they hear Quad HD they think big of the phone. Sony Xperia Z3, the flagship smartphone of Sony, does not have a Quad HD display that disappointed fans who were expecting something bigger. Xperia Z3 sports a full HD 1,080p display like the previous versions of Xperia.

Calum MacDougall, the director of Sony Xperia marketing, said that the 2K Quad HD displays will actually drain the battery of the phone and it is not worth making this sacrifice where performance and battery life is concerned. He went on to add that Sony believes that the user experience wanted to have longer battery life. The company can provide this experience with the full HD screen and the built in Sony technologies. MacDougall in an interview with Trusted reviews also said that the company does not believe in giving the customers less by having a 2K screen and sacrificing on the battery.

Quad HD screens require more processing power to push those pixels, when compared to the Full HD 1,920 x 1,080p. This could mean the possibility of overuse of power draining the battery in a short period of time. Not to mention that the more pixels a screen has, the back light will be harder to light up because the pixel are closer together and the light has to pass through the pixels to light up the screen, this makes Quad HD screens usually darker than the screens with lower resolutions. The option would be to increase the brightness in the phone, but that again will further drain the battery.

Sony's opinion on this is absolutely understandable as the Quad HD display is indeed sharp and beautiful, but definitely it is not worth on a small display. 1,080p displays too have good and sharp images and the sort of display a smartphone will sport depends on the size of its screen.

Sony Xperia Z3 will be available on October, still there is no information regarding the price.
