Bayern Munich defender Mehdi Benatia admitted that the likes of Chelsea and FC Barcelona came calling during the transfer period, but he obviously preferred to head to the Allianz Arena.

The 27-year-old centre-back was in-demand due to his fine 2013/14 season in the Serie A, wherein he helped Roma finish second and qualify for the Champions League, recording 19 clean sheets in his 33 appearances that aided the Giallorossi to conceding the second-fewest goals behind eventual winners Juventus.

"Manchester City and Chelsea, but there were also enquiries from Barcelona and Real Madrid," was his response when asked which sides showed intent.

However, there was just something about Die Roten that led him to decide in the Bundesliga giants' favour.

"I did not want to miss out on that opportunity when Bayern voiced their interest," he added.

"I perceived the offer as a huge chance, and told Sabatini that I wanted to join Bayern."

"Bayern are one of the top four clubs in the world. They play for every title year in, year out. You don't reject such an offer."

Benatia revealed that he was not supposed to leave Stadio Olimpico, yet financial constraints made him do so.

"I felt great at Roma right from the beginning," the Moroccan international told Kicker.

"We finished second, and all was great for me."

"Walter Sabatini (Roma's sporting director) told me that the club essentially wanted to keep me, but that they needed money so they might sell me."
