Sony was reportedly set to release five variants of the Xperia Z6 line-up, but new reports are now saying the Japanese company has chosen to go with two flagship models to be released in 2016.

Sony launched Z5, Z5 Premium, and Xperia Z5 Compact on Sept. 2. The company is now expected to unveil the Z6 flagship models in the first half of 2016. The two upcoming models will be powered by Snapdragon 820 64-bit SoC with four Kryo custom cores, according to Android Standard.

A recent press conference by T-Mobile Poland revealed that tech-companies like Sony, LG, HTC, Microsoft and Samsung will be launching new devices in the first half of 2016. According to a Xperia blog, Microsoft Lumia and Samsung Galaxy models will be released in the middle of Q1 and a new HTC model will be launched at the end of Q1. LG will launch its new model in the beginning of Q2, while Sony will release the two Xperia phones at the end of the same quarter, reportedly before June 2016.

Chances of a new Sony Xperia announcement before the launch cannot be ruled out at this point. The company could declare its flagship model at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) tradeshow, to be held in Barcelona in late February. The decision to release early may change if Sony opts for a summer launch.

New designs are expected from the Xperia Z6 flagship models, according to the Xperia Sony blog. The idea is to reportedly follow Apple’s metal and glass exterior design concept used in the iPhone 6. The two phones may also feature very thin bezels to enhance screen to body ratio for better display.

Unlike Xperia Z5’s 5.2-inch IPS LCD display screen with 1080p resolution, the new Z6 mobiles may sport a 5.2 or 5.3-inch Triluminos LED display with 2K resolution.
