Many people are anticipating the Mobile World congress as top players in the smartphone industry are expected to launch their latest offering during the event.

Apple and Samsung were the top-selling smartphone companies during the fourth quarter of 2011. This is based on the research report done by the research company Strategy Analytics. The research states that both Apple and Samsung dominated at half of the smartphone sales in the market. In this year's Mobile World Congress, Samsung had announced that they will not be participating and Apple has always skipped this event. The withdrawal of these companies means that other smartphone vendors could showcase their own smartphone products.

Here is the possible list of smartphones that could be revealed during MWC:

LG Electronics

LG Optimus 4X HD - This smartphone is the company's first quad-core smartphone which is fitting since LG Optimus 2X was the firm's first dual-core smartphone. In terms of specifications, it has a 4.7-inch 720p IPS display, 2,150mAh battery, and it will utilize Android ICS as its OS. Some experts consider this smartphone as LG's flagship handset for this year.

LG Optimus 3D Max - This is one of the handsets for LG's 3D line. This second-generation 3D handset is much slimmer as compared to the original with a thickness of 9.6mm. It has a 4.3-inch WVGA display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, NFC support and Android Gingerbread with 3D Max. Despite having Gingerbread as its OS, it can be upgraded to Android ICS once it has been launched.

LG Optimus L3, L5 and L7 - These handsets have the same physical features but they are very different in specifications. L3 is more budget friendly smartphone and has a 3.2-inch display. L5 has a 4.0-inch display and has Android ICS or Android 4.0 as its OS. L7 is the high-end version which has a 4.3-inch screen and would also utilize Android ICS.

LG Optimus LTE Tag- This smartphone is closely related to LG Optimus LTE. It has a 4.3-inch WVGA display, 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, and 5MP camera. As for its OS, it will utilize Gingerbread at first but it would also be upgraded to Android ICS.

HTC

Taiwan-based firm HTC also has plans to unveil their brand new smartphones during this event. There are rumors speculating that the company would unveil their quad-core smartphone dubbed as HTC One X. Before finally deciding on this name, this quad-core smartphone underwent a lot of name change from HTC Endeavor, HTC Edge, and HTC Supreme. This smartphone has a 4.7-inch HD display, 1.5 GHz, 1GB of RAM, and Android ICS as its OS.

ZTE

Chinese phone manufacturer, ZTE has also announced that they will be launching their own quad-core smartphone during this event. The company also announced that they will show a total of 8 models which would utilize both Google's Android and Microsoft Windows as its OS. There are three models which were already specified to be revealed during this event. These are PF200, N910, and Mimosa X.

The Mobile World Congress will run from Feb. 27 - Mar. 1, 2012 in Barcelona, Spain.
