Friday around 8 a.m. a highway patrolman Senior Constable David Rixon was shot multiple times on Lorraine St. in West Tamworth, northern NSW.

The officer pulled over a car on the street, which was believed to be the start of an argument. The altercation went intense and resulted to a shoot-out.

Anna Moulder, from ABC, was alarmed by a child who saw the shooting. She immediately called for emergency and reported to police.

Ten police cars and a special investigation unit arrived along with staff from the State Emergency Services.

Rixon, 41, a father of four, received a gunshot in his abdomen and stomach. He died just before paramedics were able to bring him to Tamworth Base Hospital.

Right after the shooting, police started to look for the suspect, who immediately left after the incident. The man was caught, arrested and taken to the police station.

Another alleged suspect, who was injured, was captured. He was admitted to the hospital and received treatment under police guard.

According to Mayor Col Murray, the killing of police officers is one of the crimes uncontrollable in Tamworth. The community needs 15 more officers to be able to manage the crimes in the area.

He said Tamworth doesn't have sufficient proactive policing because of the officer's inability to develop it.

This kind of situation has been feared for years. Today highlights the community's demand for more police officers according to the mayor.

There are more than 250 names of police officers included in NSW Police Forces' Honor Roll, who have sacrificed their life while on duty.

Just yesterday, the NSW Police celebrated their 150th year on service.

John Robertson, NSW opposition leader, expressed his condolences to the family and wished for peace for the other officers who died while serving the community.
