Daft Punk is in hot water over their last-minute cancellation for their appearance for The Colbert Report. Daily Show writer Paul Mercurio said that the electronic music duo had a contractual conflict with MTV, which made them cancel their appearance on the Comedy Central show.

Colbert was planning to do a six-minute dialogue with the band, knowing that the two already refused to talk or perform at the show. He was asked if he want to cancel the plan, but said no since he sees it as "an interesting challange."

"I wish we could have done this joke. It was: 'Paul [Hahn, their manager], can I ask you -- how do I even know it's them in the robot outfits, how do I even know it's them?' And he goes, 'Stephen, if it wasn't really them, they'd be doing the song,'" he said in a podcast report.

According to Billboard, VMAs Executive Producer Jesse Ignjatovic said that it was Daft Punk who made the decision not to appear on The Colbert Report
.
"We don't put restrictions on anyone. I just think that we're talking to them about a moment and then things sort of change," he said. "I would not describe that as MTV putting restrictions on people -- it was up to that artist and their management what they wanted to do."
