Police has detained and charged Chicago Bears player Sam Hurd after he accepted one kilo of packaged cocaine from an undercover federal agent posing as a drug supplier who sold it to him.

The 26-year-old Bears receiver was charged with possession of illegal drug with intent to distribute it after he was arrested outside a restaurant carrying the cocaine sold to him by the agent on Wednesday.

In the complaint against Hurd, the conversation between him and the agent dwelled on his order for five to 10 kilogrammes of cocaine and 453 kilo (1,000 pounds) of marijuana per week. He would pay for $25,000 for every kilo of cocaine and $450 per pound of marijuana.

Hurd told the agent that he would pay for the cocaine on Thursday.

Bears coach Lovie Smith said he was shocked upon learning of Hurd's arrest, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Hurd has a three-year contract with the Bears starting this season. He was formerly from the Dallas Cowboys.

The sting operation was set up by the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Dallas after Hurd's accomplice, identified as T.L., was caught transporting cocaine using Hurd's car in the Texas city in July. Also found inside the car was $88,000 in cash and a marijuana plant.

Police said T.L. had purchased the drug on behalf of Hurd.

When questioned by federal agents later, Hurd admitted he owned the cash and claimed he gave the car to his associate for maintenance and detailing.

Hurds will be transferred to Dallas, where he will likely be tried. The player hails from San Antonio.
