Parents of students at Brighton Grammar School have been notified by headmaster Ross Featherston on Wednesday that students in uniform were spotted placing bets at a Tabcorp agency. They were allegedly spotted at the Church Street, Brighton Tab, near the school’s bayside campus.

“I contacted the school last year, but it’s obvious nothing has been done because it’s still continuing,” an anonymous source told the Herald Sun. “In the morning I see them walk to school dressed in full school uniform then I see the same kids walk past in the afternoon either dressed pretending to be tradies or half in uniform, either their sports shorts or school shirt. They are visibly underage and it looks terrible.”

The anonymous source is a trader on the street who has spotted the students several times around the Tab.

"I have answered questions from the relevant journalist on this issue in a full and forthright manner, explaining our proactive position on educating boys about the risks around gambling (which includes engaging parents on such issues)," Featherston told parents.

According to the Age, some parents were even planning legal actions against any publication that brings out any story against the school or their children. Fairfax Media reported that the students would regularly place bets at the agency and were often accompanied by girls from another elite school in Brighton.

"You often see them there, at lunchtime or after school and I guarantee they're not 18," said a local business owner.

Featherston said on Thursday that he was not aware which students were placing the bets but admitted that his school would not be able to withstand the “societal issue” of gambling.

A spokesperson for Tabcorp said that it takes all such issues of gambling activities by minors very seriously and it follows strict regulations in keeping minors from using their services.
