Arsene Wenger has told journalists that his image of a miser is a result of years of austerity at the club when they did not have the kind of money needed to buy big stars. He insisted that he has no qualms in spending his own money but is hesitant to spend the amount that might put the future of his club in jeopardy. "I'm not scared to spend money and if you go out with me at night, you will understand", he joked.

Arsenal are in the transfer market and looking for a centre half and a defensive midfielder. Their primary target is Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin which was also the case at the start of the season. With Arsenal's current players at that position Mathew Flamini and Mikel Arteta both at the wrong side of 30 a long term replacement is on the cards. Morgan Schneiderlin at 25 is the right age for the club with both Premier League as well as international level experience. It is said that Wenger has been provided enough money to easily outbid any rival for this player in the next transfer window.

There are reports, from the English newspaper Daily Mail, that the gunners are also ready to make an AU $ 40 million (£ 20 million) bid for Christoph Kramer. He is currently at loan to Borussia Monchengladbach. The parent club Bayer Leverkusen are not willing to let go of their 23 year old player for anything less than AS $ 50 million (£ 25 million). Another target for the Gunners is his fellow defensive midfielder at Bayer Leverkusen Lars Bender. At 25 he will also fulfil all the quality that Morgan Schneiderlin possesses.

Arsenal's defensive reinforcements are not as straight forward as the above one. They have two established centre backs and in Calum Chambers they have a replacement in the waiting who has already impressed this season. What they are looking for is a young player who will eventually mature into a long term role.

With Arsenal spending big in the last two summer transfer windows it will not be a surprise if Wenger starts to spend big in the winter window as well. After all Wenger himself has said that the club has sufficient funds to back his ambitions.
