Former World No. 1 Andy Murray is still scheduled to play in the 2018 Brisbane International, which gets underway in the first week of January. Murray hasn't played competitive tennis since his Round of 8 defeat to American Sam Querrey in this year's Wimbledon.

According to The Courier Mail, Murray had expressed an original plan to be in Australia before Christmas. The report adds that "inquiries by Brisbane organisers have led them to believe that Murray will fly out from London after Christmas. As one of the top four Brisbane men’s seeds receiving first-round byes, the dual Rafter Arena champion would not play his first match on January 3 or 4."

Murray, nursing a hip injury, had previously hinted at possibly skipping the 2018 Australian Open to avoid endangering full recovery. However, the Scot has reportedly been having drill sessions with coach Jamie Delgado in London and is on track for an early 2018 return. There was also chatter of Murray starting the new season at the Qatar Open, an exhibition ATP event in Doha, which gets underway Dec. 31.

Andy Murray won’t rush back from injury

Last month, Murray said that he had no intention to rush back from the injury. “Things have been going pretty well so far in the rehab, but you just never know. I’ve been training for a few weeks now. Some days I’ve felt great and some days not so good. But I will come back when I’m ready and when I’m 100 percent fit. I probably made a bit of a mistake trying to get ready for the US Open but it was the last major of the year and I wanted to give it a go. And now it’s time to give my body the rest and recovery it needs. I’ll come back when I’m ready."

As of this writing, the likes of World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov, the newly-crowned ATP World Tour Finals winner, have all confirmed their participation at the Brisbane International (Jan. 1 - 8). The ATP 250 series event has been an annual fixture at the Queensland Tennis Centre since 2009.
