Two French players meet in the semifinal round of the Monte Carlo Masters as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga battles Gael Monfils for a final round appearance in Monaco.

Tsonga will hope to carry his momentum of upsetting world No. 3 Roger Federer into his last four clash against Monfils. The 30-year-old French was able to hold on and escape Federer in the deciding set to win the match 3-6 6-2 7-5 and bid for his first title of the season.

"It's always special to win against Federer," Tsonga said, reports the ATP’s official website. "I'm happy that I won. I'm happy that I'm still in the tournament and I have a chance to go to the final for the first time."

Monfils, on the other hand, is coming off a victory over Marcel Granollers 6-2 6-4 in a bracket that would have been a tough challenge for the 29-year-old if Novak Djokovic still plays at the tournament. Monfils admitted that it would be difficult facing his compatriot, but claimed he knows how Tsonga will approach their semifinals Monte Carlo Masters encounter.

"Jo has a game that I have trouble with," Monfils said. "I will need to find a solution to push him back and to try to stop him dominating the rallies...If I have a slight advantage in this match, it's because I know what he's going to do. He's going to play aggressively."

Tsonga, ranked as world No. 9, faces Monfils for their seventh career matchup, with the former leading by 4-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head battle. However, Monfils won their last meeting in last year’s edition of the Miami open, beating Tsonga in Round of 32 of the event.

The winner between Tsonga and Monfils could face either Rafael Nadal or Andy Murray in the final round.
