An onlooker has recorded the entire incident of a rescue helicopter lifting former World Champion Formula One racer Michael Schumacher from the precipitous slope to bring him to a hospital. Many skiers can be seen watching the helicopter take off. While skiing with his 14-year-old son, Mick, Schumacher's head hit a rock following an off-piste skiing fall. The Formula 1 racing star is at present struggling for survival and his condition is said to be critical after sustaining head injuries.

Before heading out to ski, all amateur skiers should always wear helmet. It is thanks to the helmet that Schumacher sustained deadly injuries but he is currently being treated at the University hospital in Grenoble, France.

"Without a helmet, Michael Schumacher would be dead. Schumacher's injury is of the same sort as those suffered in recent seasons by (Swiss Daniel) Albrecht or (Austria's Johan) Grugger. They were seriously injured but they came out of it and went on to live a normal life. Schumacher didn't go as fast as they did so he has a good chance. Athletes have the strength to overcome such bad times," said Guenter Hujara, men's Alpine skiing World Cup director.

At the news conference doctors said about his condition:

"I came here not in terms of a doctor but as a friend. I'd like to thank everyone for the support and the excellent medical team who treated him so well. I am very worried just like his family; we are very worried about his condition. The doctors won't tell you more because they can't tell you more; they are working hour by hour. This kind of accident, luckily he's 45 which is better than if you were older. The helmet wasn't enough to protect him completely but it really did help. We see a lot of head injuries like this," stated Professor Stéphane Chabarde.
