Qualcomm and Ericsson have officially announced the Category 10 LTE modem called Gobi 9x45, which can deliver a max download speed of up to 450 Mbps on portable devices like smartphones and tablets. Qualcomm has revealed that the new LTE modem is 1.5 times quicker than the Category 6 LTE modem.

Qualcomm claims that they have made use of 20nm technology, which ensures that the new LTE offers high-speed web connectivity with less power consumption and produces less heat. It supports a wide range of connectivity standards such as GSM, CDMA, EVD0 and so on. It also supports other connectivity features like GPS, GLONASS and Galileo. It even offers exclusive support LTE features like VoLTE and dual SIM connectivity on LTE.

According to PhoneArena, the high speed connection of up to 450 Mbps was achieved by combining Qualcomm Gobi 9x45 modem along with RF360 Envelope Tracker. The new LTE modem can reach a max upload speed of up 100 Mbps. Since the LTE Cat 10 modem has a smaller construction, it will reportedly support compact-sized Snapdragon 810 chipsets. PhoneArena further states that Qualcomm is currently testing the Cat 10 LTE modem and the devices that will arrive in 2015 will feature the new LTE modem. According to the source, the new high-speed Cat 10 LTE modem will probably be equipped with a Snapdragon 810 chipset.

The Snapdragon 10 SoC is speculated as the next chipset from Qualcomm. As of now, there are a handful of devices that run on Snapdragon 805 chipset such as the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, Motorola Droid Turbo and Google Nexus 6. However, there are only few smartphones that feature the Category 6 LTE modem. Most of the high-end smartphones available in the market that support LTE connectivity feature Category 4 LTE modem.
