Since alcoholism is one of the major social problems around the world, a number of researchers conduct their study around the cause and effect of the problem. A latest research has revealed that the colour of the eyes of an individual may partially determine the level of alcoholism in the person.

The research conducted by the scientists at the University of Vermont has revealed that people who have light coloured eyes are more likely to become dependent on alcohol. The category of people with light-coloured eyes includes individuals who have grey, green, blue or brown colour in the centre.

The team based their conclusion on the study conducted on a group of 1,263 European-Americans. It was found that light-coloured people were more alcohol-dependent than their counterparts with dark-coloured eyes.

The researchers took into consideration all the factors that could have influenced the study results, including genetic history, sex and age. Of all the people with light-coloured eyes, it was found that people with blue eyes had the largest alcohol dependence.

In addition, the researchers found a “genetic interaction” between the genes responsible for eye colour and those responsible for alcohol dependence. During a genetic interaction, one gene influences the effect of the other gene.

The researchers are now planning to expand the research and replicate its findings to another group of people. If the same or correlated results are obtained, then the researchers will try and examine whether the effect is purely due to genes or other cultural factors play a role in it as well.

The complete study results have been published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics Part B.
