Mercedes-Benz To Go Fully Electric By 2030

Mercedes-Benz maker Daimler on Thursday announced that the luxury vehicles will go completely electric by the end of the decade.

“Be ready to go all-electric at the end of the decade, where market conditions allow,” the company said in a press release.

By 2022, Mercedes-Benz will have an electric option in all its vehicles, but the brand expects to have all newly launched architectures be only electric starting in 2025 and will plan to keep it that way.

The switchover will shift from electric-first to electric-only, in order to accelerate towards an emissions-free and software-driven future, the press release explains.

Three models are being designed that will be launched as purely electric to come out starting in 2025. This will include an "MB.EA model," for medium and large passenger cars, next is an "AMG.EA model," for performance vehicles, and a "VAN.EA model," for lighter commercial vehicles and vans.

Mercedes-Benz is calling the shift for all luxury cars to move to electric to be reaching a “tipping point,” and that most brands will be following in a similar direction.

"The EV shift is picking up speed - especially in the luxury segment, where Mercedes-Benz belongs. The tipping point is getting closer and we will be ready as markets switch to electric-only by the end of this decade," said Ola Källenius, the CEO of Daimler and Mercedes-Benz in a statement.

The company said that it has been preparing for this shift by already having early investments into the manufacturing of these electric vehicles and says that it could even currently start producing them.

“Thanks to early investments into flexible manufacturing, and the state-of-the-art MO360 production system, Mercedes-Benz can mass-produce BEVs already today,” the press release read.

Mercedes-Benz also plans to in-source all its electric drive technology in the future.
