Mel Gibson is currently filming “Hacksaw Ridge” in Camden Council, New South Wales. The location was allocated for residential development after the production of the upcoming war movie starring “The Amazing Spider-Man” star Andrew Garfield.

Previously, environmentalists protested when they found out that more than 80 trees had been removed from the “Hacksaw Ridge” location to create a pock-holed battlefield. Camden Mayor Lara Symkowiak said that rezoning of the property is expected to begin soon.

All necessary approvals had been given for the filming of “Hacksaw Ridge” in the location, according to Symkowiak. The filming of “Hacksaw Ridge” is expected to be finished in December.

“The DA included tree removal in various locations and conditions were imposed to replant and rehabilitate part of the land,” Symkowiak said, as quoted by Daily Telegraph. The mayor added that the “Hacksaw Ridge” film set was part of the South West Growth Centre.

The war movie is about WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss played by Garfield. Refusing to kill people during the Battle of Okinawa, Doss was the first Conscientious Objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor ward in the United States.

“Hacksaw Ridge” also stars Teresa Palmer as Dorothy Schutte, Sam Worthington as Captain Glover, Vince Vaughn as Sergeant Howell, Ryan Corr as Lieutenant Manvill and Richard Roxburgh as Colonel Stelzer, among others. “The Dressmaker” star, Hugo Weaving, is also part of the cast and plays William Doss, the father of Garfield’s character.

Recently, Demarest Media and Cross Creek collaborated to produce and finance “Hacksaw Ridge” with Kilburn Media as their funding partner, Deadline reports. The war movie is set to be released in 2016.

Gibson will only direct “Hacksaw Ridge” and will not be part of the cast. After the war movie, he is set to reunite with Sylvester Stallone in "The Expendables 4" in 2017.
