Jason Day could edge out Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy in the battle for top spot in golf’s world rankings. Day, who won The Barclays at the weekend by a half-dozen strokes, could be world No. 1 at Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, which will start on Sept. 4-7.

Australian golfer Jason Day could mathematically overtake both McIlroy and Spieth in the world golf rankings at the second round of the four-event tournament next week. According to ESPN, if Day wins in the Deutsche Bank Championship, and McIlroy and Spieth finish lower than second place, the Australian golfer would sit atop the world rankings, becoming the 19th player to ascend to that honour ever since the world ranking started in 1986.

"I never thought I'd have the opportunity, mathematically, to get to No. 1," Day said. "It's been a goal of mine."

However, the 27-year-old Day, who is currently seeded as first overall in the FedEx standings, admitted his focus is on playing good golf, which could eventually lead to him being world No. 1. Day has won four PGA Tour victories this season, and has been victorious in three of his past four tournament starts, including his first career major title at Whistling Straits.

Spieth has dethroned McIlroy in the world rankings after a second place finish behind Day in the PGA Championship, but the American golfer only held the top spot for two weeks. McIlroy reclaimed the top spot despite not competing in the FedEx Cup opener after Spieth missed the cut.

After a sensational season, Day is also inline for the PGA Tour Player of the Year Award. However, Day believes he could only win the individual award if he tops the FedEx Cup and two more major tournaments, casting his vote for Spieth, who won this year’s Masters Tournament and the US Open.

"Right now, Jordan Spieth gets my vote,” Day said, reports SB Nation. “There's three more tournaments I would love to win, and I'd love to win the FedEx Cup."
