Nina Dobrev confirmed that she will return to reprise her role as Elena Gilbert in the series finale of “The Vampire Diaries.” She also teased that she will have a bigger role to play after her character’s supposed end in “The Vampire Diaries.”

Nina Dobrev announced her return to “The Vampire Diaries” on Instagram on Jan. 26, 2017. She shared a photo of what is believed to be the series finale script with her name on it, alongside lighted candles and other ancient-looking parchments. She wrote that it is Thursday, but her post is not a “TBT” or throwback. The script revealed that the finale of “The Vampire Diaries” is written by series creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson and titled, “I Was Feeling Epic,” after Lexi’s iconic line in the first season. The actress also added the hashtags #BackOnSet and #TVDForever.

Showrunner Julie Plec told MTV in an interview that she is thrilled to bring “The Vampire Diaries” to an end in the manner that they always intended. They wanted Nina Dobrev to return and help them bid farewell. She continued that she feels very excited to have the actress back in “The Vampire Diaries” to guarantee that their last episode will truly be epic.

Nina Dobrev exited “The Vampire Diaries” after Season 6. Elena Gilbert and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) shared one last dance before she went on a long sleep for several decades. She made the ultimate sacrifice for best friend Bonnie (Kat Graham). In 2015, the actress said that she decided to leave “The Vampire Diaries” because she did not want to be identified only by her appearance on the series. However, she was given the chance to come back for the series finale.

Fans are already getting excited about Elena’s return and how it will affect her relationship with Damon. He may finally discover a solution to break Kai’s spell and bring Elena back from her deep slumber. Others believe that the story will fast-track several years into the future, after Bonnie fully lived out her life, and show Elena and Damon’s future together.

“The Vampire Diaries” series finale is scheduled to air on Mar. 10, 2017 on The CW in the US. In Australia, it will air on FOX8. More updates and details on “The Vampire Diaries” are expected soon.
