The hairstyle of Rey in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is apparently a “nod to Leia,” a new report reveals. Daisy Ridley, who plays the character in the movie, had to wear some heavy sun protection while filming her scenes for the movie.

In a recent interview with Allure, the makeup team of the movie revealed how they created the look of Rey and they also talked about some of the challenges they faced. Rey will be seen wearing “three segmented buns” hairstyle throughout the movie.

Hair designer Lisa Tomblin said that the approach to the hairstyle was to ensure that it was “cool, practical and different – and not so fussy.” Each knot of her hairstyle has been secured with a piece of brown wool. “It's rustic, like something she'd find in the desert,” Tomblin said.

Tomblin also revealed that the style was a “nod to Leia.” Leia (Carrie Fisher) is a major character from the original trilogy and Fisher will be reprising her role after over three decades.

Rey’s makeup also included some desert sand that was stuck on her face. "We took sand from the desert where we were filming and boiled it in water to sterilise it. Then we'd stick it on Daisy's face before each take," the head of the makeup department Amanda Knight said. The “dirty” look of the character is because Rey is a scavenger in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Sterilising of the sand proved to be of little help, as Ridley apparently had her face down in the sand while filming her action sequences. “ Poor Daisy really went through it," Knight said.

While filming “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in the desert of Abu Dhabi, the makeup team paid particular attention to sun protection. SPF 50+ was needed under the makeup to protect Ridley from possible sun burn. “ As soon as the take was over, we'd duck under umbrellas. Not only was it over 100 degrees, but the reflection off the sand was brutal," Knight said.
