The National Football League announced the referees made a mistake after failing to give a penalty on the San Diego Chargers for an illegal formation on an unconverted field goal by Ryan Succop during an all-important game against the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday.

Succop narrowly missed his 41-yard field goal, but the Chargers were clearly in illegal formation. A penalty could have given Succop another chance to hammer the final nail in the coffin on the Chargers' playoff hope, but they went on to win the match and beat the Pittsburgh Steelers for the final wildcard AFC playoff spot.

"On the play, San Diego lined up with seven men on one side of the snapper," the league said in a statement released Monday morning.

"This should have been penalized as an illegal formation by the defense."
