As the non-waiver MLB trade deadline approaches, the St Louis Cardinals acquired veteran Steve Cischek in a deal with the Miami Marlins. The move hopes to help the Cardinals’ bullpen while St Louis tries to retain their top spot in the MLB standings with a league-best 62-34 win-loss record as of Friday.

In exchange for dealing Cishek to the Cardinals, the Marlins got Double-A pitching prospect Kyle Barraclough as confirmed by both teams. The 29-year-old right-hander also took to Twitter to thank his previous team and expressed his excitement over joining the Cardinals.

For his career, all with the Florida/Miami franchise, Cishek has a win-loss record of 17-20 with 2.89 ERA, 310 strikeouts and 94 saves in 284 games.

The Marlins are currently struggling this season with a 41-56 win-loss record, the second worst mark in the entire league.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak admitted that they were aggressive in adding another arm before the MLB trade deadline on July 31 and that the team is excited to have acquired closer Cishek, who will join St. Louis’ bullpen that include pitchers like Trevor Rosenthal, Seth Maness, Randy Choate, Kevin Siegrist, Carlos Villanueva, Migue Socolovich and Samuel Tuivailala, among others.
