Amerasian Megan Young as she hails both from the Philippines and the United States and embodies the best of both counties. Megan Young, the Virginia-born and Olongapo-raised host/actress who made history by becoming the Philippines's first Miss World title holder.

"We don't have a toast tonight. But we're saying three things: Mabuhay ang Pilipinas, mabuhay ang America at mabuhay ang Ms. World!," US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas Jr said in spontaneous remarks at a reception to introduce new Embassy press and cultural officers Monday night.

Thomas earlier congratulated Young via Twitter, pointing her birthplace Alexandria, Virginia, in his congratulations.

"Congrats Miss World 2013! Fil-Am Megan Young from Alexandria, Va to Manila, Ph. pic.twitter.com/ALd5ThnH35" Thomas tweeted on 29 Sep 13

23 years old Megan Young born in 1990 to parents (American father and Filipino mother). They moved to Olongapo City at age 10 since then she stayed in the Philippines and pursued a career in showbiz.

"She represents both of our countries as a Filipino-American in so many ways: intelligence, beauty - I know something about beauty in the Philippines I tell you - poise and never quitting," said Thomas.

Thomas cited one more fact familiar between the US and the Philippines - a free press, and the transparency it has afforded governance.

"When we got to the part of how we're going to deal with the press, someone said what? The press? We don't have to deal with the press. We just tell them what to write and we ignore them. And I felt how blessed I was to be an American, to be from a country where we have to deal with the press, and to be living here in the Philippines, another country where you have to deal with the press," Thomas said.

He said there is clear reflection of "vitality" in Philippines' media, including the extensively utilized social media platforms.

"And that's why we never say we have to have all the questions in advance (for media interviews), [or that] we can't be asked certain things. We have to be able to defend ourselves and our policies, and that is important. 'Cause the press, social media, all those, are making changes," said Thomas.

He mentioned natives posted on the US Embassy's official Facebook page, where Embassy personnel asked social media users the question: "If you had a chance to tour President Barack Obama around the Philippines, where would you take him and why?"

To meet with President Aquino for wide-ranging dialogue on Philippine-US affairs, Obama is scheduled to visit Manila, on October 11 and 12.

"People have been saying all kinds of things. Not only do they want to take him to other parts of the Philippines, like Palawan, Boracay all those beautiful beaches. But they also say they want him to investigate, terminate corruption. That's not his job, but it's reflective of the passion you have in your ability to say things without fear of retribution," said Thomas.
