Jon Stewart on Monday made a statement in support of his “The Daily Show” successor, Trevor Noah. The South African comic was heavily criticised last week for a series of jokes on Twitter.

"I can say this, I think, without hesitation. Trevor Noah will earn your trust and respect. Or not.” Stewart said on Monday’s edition of the Comedy Central fake news show. This was his first on-air chance to respond to the backlash against Noah’s old tweets.

"My experience with him is that he is an incredibly thoughtful and considerate and funny and smart individual," Stewart said. He also added that if viewers give Noah the chance to prove himself, “it’s going to be well worth it.”

Noah was announced as Jon Stewart’s successor last week. But, as The Hollywood Reporter reported, people found his old tweets labelling them as anti-Semitic and sexist.

Despite the controversy, Noah has a lot of supporters, including Comedy Central itself. And now, Jon Stewart has also defended him.
