How to Add Setting Icons to iOS 5 Homescreen
Apple customers who are using iOS 5 are having a hard time in accessing their settings because they have to go the main settings app in order to adjust the most-used apps like disabling WiFi or adjusting the screen brightness. Instead of having the settings icon on the home screen, most iOS 5 users need to go through these complicated steps.
Users who already have jailbroken devices already have discovered a way to put the settings icon in their home screen. They were able to do this through using apps like SBSetting to toggle different settings with just a single click from the apple tray or their home screen. For users that do not want the option of having their devices jailbroken, there is an alternative method.
One option is the one used by IconSetting. The group utilizes the Safari Web browser and adds browser shortcuts to the home screen in order to create shortcuts of the frequently used iOS settings. CNET discussed these steps and also provided screenshots that could guide users through the process. This procedure could be done without the need for jailbreaking the device. The steps are as follows:
1. Upon opening iOS, go to http://iphoneza.co.za/IconSettings/
2. Scroll down the list of the different settings that could be used
3. Choose the link for the setting that you want to have as a shortcut. A new window will be opened in Mobile Safari. Once a message pops up indicating to open the link in Settings, tap on Cancel.
4. Tap on the button located in the middle of the toolbar located at the bottom of the screen. Choose Add to Home Screen.
5. Wait for the icon image on the shortcut load before adding to the home screen.
6. A new icon will be saved to the home screen. You have the option of adding it to a folder, or move it around like you would any other icon on your iOS device.
7. Tapping on the icon will directly open the corresponding Settings screen.
During the testing period of this procedure, this solution would only be possible if the user is accessing the shortcut while it is running on an active data connection. After some improvements, it became more effective even without a data connection. A total of 40 different setting shortcuts could be created through using these instructions.
