Episode 1 of "Homeland" Season 3 unravels an ugly truth about the radical change in the relationship between Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) and Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin).

The end of the premiere episode of Showtime’s hit series made a surprising twist this early and it saw Saul turning his back on Carrie. Now that he is head of CIA, following the death of David Estes (David O’Hare) at the Season 2 finale, Saul is showing a lot of changes.

The changes in his character, however, were seen in his ability to make tough decisions as he orchestrated six strikes against those behind the massive explosion at Langley 2 months ago.

But more shockingly, the new season offered twists no one would ever suspect at this early of the season---Berenson turning his back on Carrie.

It will be recalled that Saul was Carrie’s shoulders to lean on (and to cry on, with quivering chins and all) for most part of Season 2. It was Saul who was there for Carrie when all hell broke loose for the CIA agent. It was the time when she was hospitalised and her bipolar disease got the best of her.

Saul was there for Carrie, even looking after her when she got sick. Not only was Saul Carrie’s immediate supervisor at the CIA, he was more of like a father to her. Saul was Carrie’s confidante.

But in the new season, Saul was changing directions.

The final scene of the first episode gave "Homeland’s" devoted fans a taste of the changes in the Saul-Carrie duo. Saul was called at the congressional hearing in relation to the series of attacks he orchestrated as new head of CIA.

Having put Saul on the spot, the chairman of the senate committee who conducted a closed door inquiry on the Langley bombing asked him straight out on the nature of Carrie’s relationship with war veteran, Sgt. Nicholas Brody.

Though Saul insisted that the Carrie issue was not entirely “agency-related matter,” the new CIA director disclosed what Carrie had been trying to conceal for more than a decade at the agency---her bipolar disease.

And while Saul appeared as if he was regretting ever disclosing anything related to Carrie’s mental illness, he went on confirming that Carrie was, indeed, sleeping with Nick Brody.

The first episode of "Homeland" Season 3 ended with Carrie crying, watching her friend and supervisor telling the whole world what she has been hiding for all her life.

As the screen went black to credits, Carrie dropped her shoulders, being helpless and probably more alone than ever. The bigger question is, how long will this new Saul-Carrie relationship last? Has Saul really betrayed Carrie as he appeared to be at the ending of the Season 3 premiere?
