K2 Promotions managing director Tom Loeffler believes that a bout between Unified middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin and Amir Khan would be a “huge fight,” but only if the Bolton welterweight gets past WBC middleweight champ Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in their clash in May.

Loeffler is convinced that a fight between Golovkin and Khan would be massive from a “financial perspective,” with both fighters’ fans expected to buy such fight. Loeffler claimed to Sky Sports that while Golovkin fighting against Alvarez would be the biggest fight in the sport this year, a potential clash against Khan would also pose the same hype.

“From a marketing and promotional standpoint, Amir brings a lot to the table,” Loeffler said, reports Boxing Scene. “Khan-Golovkin would be a huge fight in the UK but would be even bigger in the US, from a financial perspective.”

Alvarez and Khan are set to meet in the boxing ring on May 7 for the WBC middleweight title. Khan is the underdog heading into the match as the British boxer needed to move to weight divisions to have a shot at Canelo’s belt. But if Khan could stage an upset, he would be Golovkin’s mandatory opponent for the middleweight belt.

Meanwhile, Golovkin, who will be in action on Apr. 23 at the Forum in California against upcoming fighter Dominic Wade, could also be the frontrunner to fight another British boxer in WBO middleweight champ Billy Joe Saunders. The undefeated Kazakh has been linked to fighting Saunders, with GGG focusing in unifying the middleweight belts.

It would be interesting to see Golovkin taking on a champion instead of a predicted lopsided match against Wade. However, according to Jeff Aranow of Boxing News 24, the Kazakh knockout artist must appear impressive in his fight against Wade if Golovkin really wishes to face Saunders in the boxing ring.

“[Golovkin] needs an impressive performance in his fight against challenger Dominic Wade on April 23 to help increase interest in a summer fight against WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, because the British are going to be watching Golovkin’s fight against Wade on BoxNation,” Aranow wrote.
