Former British professional football player David Beckham has been hailed as People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for this year. The 40-year-old retired football player has dethroned “Huntsman” heartthrob Chris Hemsworth, who received the title in 2014.

Beckham was revealed as this year’s pick for the title on Tuesday's “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” episode. The global superstar, who was in London at the time, was crowned the winner after the audience members were asked to guess his identity.

Appearing via a video conference, Beckham said, “It’s the best moment of my career.” He credited his parents, hairdresser and stylist for the award he received. The soccer icon also jokingly acknowledged the help of Photoshop.

Beckham took to Facebook on Wednesday to thank People magazine for the recognition. His photos for the magazine were shot by fashion photographer Marc Hom.

“I thought I was past my sell by date but thanks to People.com for the accolade and the compliment! I always feel a little shy when receiving these Awards, though it will make my Mum happy. This one the kids will laugh at, as they see what Daddy looks like in the morning!” he wrote on his Facebook account.

People magazine also shared on Instagram its latest magazine cover featuring Beckham. In the photo, Beckham is seen looking playfully at the camera. He is wearing a blue shirt with these words written on it: “He’s a romantic husband, a devoted dad--and he vacuums!”

Beckham has become the first non-performer to earn the title since John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1988. His competitors for the title included Matt Damon, Chris Pratt and Idris Elba.

People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” is an annual celebration of men who are seen as sex symbol. The title was first given to Mel Gibson in 1985.
