A Winnipeg company, You Have Mail, has just taken on the challenge that's going to be left behind by Canada Post, delivering twice-weekly their clients' mail and parcel right at their doorsteps. Canada Post is bidding goodbye to front door-to-door mail delivery effective late October. Instead, the service will be replaced with community boxes. Canada Post devised the community boxes as a more effective means for clients to receive their mail and parcel since most people already do not use the front door-to-door mail delivery in light of the digital age.

YouHaveMail.ca, the name of the Winnipeg start-up, has scheduled Oct 20 as the launch date of its service. It is exactly the same day that Canada Post starts phasing out delivery to 5.1 million Canadian homes.

Pending success and client demand, YouHaveMail targets to expand later this year to Calgary and Fort McMurray, Alta. Services to other Canadian cities may also follow.

Dan Trudeau, YouHaveMail.ca company founder, said they are convinced front door-to-door mail delivery still offers profits. Canada Post had said in 2013 they are leaving the service because it is no longer profitable. It likewise said delivering letters door-to-door is no longer practical since fewer people actually use snail mail.

On their Web site, YouHaveMail.ca offers the following options:

"There are a lot of people who are interested in this service, either because they have too busy a life or they are physically unable to get out," the Globe and Mail quoted Trudeau. "We are basically a courier service going to get something for our customers."

In 2013, Canada Post delivered 1.2 billion fewer letters compared to 2006. It said the closure of the home delivery will enable it to incur savings of up to $500 million annually.
