What seemed to be a ball of fire descended over a town in Iceland and was caught on video. The alleged UFO was caught in a time lapse footage recorded in the Northern part of Iceland.

Bjarki Mikkelsen, the person who recorded the footage in Akureyri, said he did not think the video recorded anything strange until he viewed the recording.

The unidentified flying object which appears red in Mikkelsen’s video footage can be seen descending towards a few building in the Icelandic town. The video also shows the ball of fire disappearing behind one of Akureyri’s structures.

Opinions about what the object is are divided. Some comments on YouTube say that the object is most likely a drone while others are saying it is a Chinese lantern.

Although opinions are divided, there is still no conclusive evidence as to what the ball of fire really is.

The UFO Fascination

Strange flying objects have been around for centuries, according to Salon writer Michael Humphrey. In the Nile, over 3, 000 years ago, a man allegedly saw what seemed to be a “shining disk” descending onto the valley.

Other records show based on Humphrey’s report, is what happened in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1787 where a number of people saw “a fiery globe larger than the sun”.

Eight years after the Scotland incident, a group of Chinese people saw a “large star” that allegedly “rose and fell” more than twice and that it was followed by another “star”. The second “large star” reportedly crashed in a village nearby.
French astronomer Jacques Vallee, the writer of “Wonders in the Sky: Unexplained Aerial Objects from Antiquity to Modern Times”, said that such stories are vital because they not only capture the imagination of mankind but also says a lot about mankind’s fears and beliefs.

Together with his co-author Chris Aubeck, Vallee lists 500 sightings based on testimonies of individuals from centuries ago. Vallee notes that between 1460 BC and 1879, the commonalities of sightings were that the UFOs were balls of light in erratic flight. According to Vallee, this offers modern man an insight on human behaviour.
