CEBU, Philippines - A strong 6.8 magnitude quake struck parts of Visayas in the Philippines on Monday at 11:00 a.m.

State seismologists said the quake's epicenter was in the sea between Negros and Cebu. The quake did not result to major damage although initial reports confirmed that the quake triggered landslides and caused the death of five people.

"Old or poorly built structures suffer considerable damage. Some well-built structures are slightly damaged," The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a bulletin that "no destructive widespread tsunami" would be caused by the quake but did say that "earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local

Tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter."

Philvolcs raised tsunami alert level 2 although it did not order an evacuation.

No tsunami came except some 1-meter waves near the shoreline and the warnings were cancelled by 3 p.m. in the afternoon.

However, rumors of a tidal wave and water reaching downtown Cebu spread like wildfire in text messages and social networks. This caused panic in metro Cebu where many people fled their homes and offices to run for higher ground.
