Sports can sometimes create that path for surprising bonds between rivals. Tennis stars Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki are a great example that friendship can develop between two competitors. Recently, Caroline has spoken about her friendship with Williams in an essay that she wrote when she nominated her for Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. Now, it is Serena' turn to speak about her friendship with the Dane tennis star.

In a Q&A session with former World number one and ESPN tennis commentator Chris Evert, Serena opened up about her bond with Caroline. While there is really no formula on how to become good acquaintances with everybody, Serena didn't find it hard to make friends with Caroline the first time that she met her.

"I have had a love for Caroline from the day I met her," Serena said. "And then when times were tough for her and for me, we were always there for each other."

According to Serena, they used to text each other only once, but their friendship has taken further than that. They are now exchanging text messages all day. Not everyone that people meet will want to hang out with each other, but for Serena, it is fun to get to hang out with someone that plays on tour and travel with. Although Serena and Caroline play the same sport, they get to enjoy each other's company on a casual level and still talk about things that happening on and off the tennis court.

Serena was one of the first persons who showed support for Caroline's called-off engagement, as told in Caroline's essay for her Sportsman nominee. Caroline knew that Serena didn't have the obligation to be there for her, but the top-ranked American athlete has been a shoulder for her to lean on during one of the difficult days in her life.

Caroline said that Serena is a type of person who is always "concerned" about her family and friends. She said that Serena continues to be an inspiration for her.

For whatever reason, Serena and Caroline just clicked with each other unusually well. Their friendship is not going anywhere.
