The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, it has been revealed. The name was reportedly a favourite among the bookies too. The news was announced by the Kensington Palace on May 4.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana,” Kensington Palace announced in a statement, writes The Telegraph. "The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge," the statement added. The news of the baby's name delighted the royal fans who were eagerly awaiting for the Palace to make the announcement.

“The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge,” writes the Kensington Palace on Twitter. The tweet has been liked by many royal fans, who were desperately awaiting the news. According to the website, the popularity of the name Charlotte “has dipped in recent years” as it was placed at number 21 at the Office for National Statistics girls' names statistics of 2013, with 2,242 births. Other possible baby names considered by bookies for the new princess were Alice, Elizabeth, Olivia, Victoria and Rose.

Her Royal Highness, Princess of Cambridge joins her elder brother Prince George, and is the fourth in line for the British throne. The baby's middle name “Elizabeth” is common to the royal family. The Queen is named Elizabeth and so was her mother Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the website added. The choice of the last name as “Diana” also reflects the couple's fondness for Prince William's mother, late Princess Diana. The website also added that the name Charlotte is a feminine form of the name Charles and means “petite.”

Kensington Palace officially announced that arrival of baby Charlotte, the couple's second child, shortly after Kate Middleton went into labour on May 2. The baby arrived at 8:43 a.m. and weighed 8lbs., and 3oz. Kate emerged from St. Mary's Hospital with Prince William by her side just ten hours after giving birth to new baby. The Duchess wore a beautiful Jenny Packham dress in yellow as the crowd cheered at the arrival of baby Charlotte.
