"Person of Interest" starring Michael Emerson (Harold Finch), Sarah Shahi (Sameen Shaw), Jim Caviezel (John Reese), Lionel Fusco (Kevin Chapman), and Amy Acker (Root) aired "If-Then-Else" (Season 4, episode 11) on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014. It was about The Machine's various scenarios featuring its assets as it chooses which one could help save humanity. "Person of Interest" Season 4, episode 11 "If-Then-Else" was written by Denise Thé and directed by Chris Fisher. Here's what happened in "If-Then-Else." The Machine presented several no-win scenarios as part of a simulation in order to assess the best move it can possibly make to save as much innocent people as it could. It is a reaction to Samaritan's attack on the stock market and worldwide economy. The "POI" team had to use an override device that must be deployed in the stock market to prevent Samaritan's drastic move into reaching catastrophic levels.

In each of the scenarios presented by The Machine, one of its assets eventually dies. Unfortunately, the real-life scenario also ended with Shaw sacrificing herself to save the "POI" team as well as the rest of humanity. She went out of the elevator they are riding to escape their captors because it wouldn't activate without pressing the override device. In doing so, she was met by a lot of bullets as well as Martine who's ready to blow her brains out. But, before she made the ultimate sacrifice, she kissed Root passionately.
