The San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks were preseason favourites to reach the Super Bowl this season. On Sunday, only one will get to prove that top billing.

Both San Francisco and Seattle are led by young and versatile quarterbacks that can get it done both on ground and through the air.

The 49ers has 26-years-old Colin Kaepernick, who totaled 423 passing yards, 113 rushing yards in two games in this postseason while the Seahawks are led by 25-years-old Russell Wilson, who had 3,357 passing yards and 539 rushing yards in 16 games in the regular season.

While the attention will be on these young guns who already have had playoff experiences the last two years, the focus will also be on their respective team’s defenses. Seattle is no. 1 in the league in pass defense (172.0 opponents’ yards per game) and 7th in rush defense (101.6) while San Francisco is 7th (221.0) and 4th in rush defense (95.9).

These teams also rank no. 1 and no. 3 in total scoring defense; The Seahawks limit opposition to 14.4 points per game and the 49ers to 17.0 points per outing.

Seattle running back Marshall Lynch leads the team in total rushing yards (1,275) and was key in the Seahawks’ divisional round win over the New Orleans Saints with 140 yards and two touchdowns.

The 49ers somewhat contained Lynch in the teams’ last meeting limiting him to just 72 rushing yards with San Francisco gutting out the 19-17 win in Week 14.

The 49ers and Seahawks split their season series this year as the Seahawks got the win in Week 2 with a 29-3 blowout.
