Miss Australia Universe 2013, Olivia Wells

Her intentions seem to be good - she proclaims to defer her medical studies for a year, the time she's representing the crown, and then going back to finish it. Like all the ladies vying for this much glamorized if mildly debasing title; judged on their ability to carry off bikini and gowns with equal aplomb and to answer multiple inane questions with incredible grace and prowess - Olivia too fielded her set with panache.

She later admitted that being an ex-pageant queen might clash a tad with her dreams of being a doctor, particularly since she wants to go and work in third-world countries. However she also said that two shouldn't be mutually exclusive, claiming that she loved her 10 weeks of medical school and certainly wants to get back to it.

The Miss Australia Universe pageant have launched many a career though and no, not in medicine. Jennifer Hawkins - who was crowned Miss Australia and then went on to become Miss Universe in 2004 has become a successful TV show host and presenter in her own right. Jesinta Campbell, Miss Australia 2010 has become a TV celebrity of sorts while Rachael Finch, runner up in the 2009 pageant in definitely in the running too with being the presenter of MasterChef Australia. Last but not the least is Scherri-Lee Biggs, a successful model and title-winner of the Miss Australia Universe 2011.

It's now a wait and watch, to see if Olivia who had entered the competition as a means to procrastinate on an assignment, will "make a difference to the medical world" or just rock some hearts as yet another celebrity. First come first though is the wait to see if she can bring home the Miss Universe title. The very first title was brought to this land down under by then weathergirl Kerry Anne Wells who later pursued a career as a news reporter - today she's a successful fashion designer and a body image consultant. After a long gap of 32 years, it was in 2004 that Jennifer Hawkins got crowned as Miss Universe. Soon after, Hawkins was doing an in-store runway show at Westfield Miranda mall in Australia when she accidentally stepped on the hem of her skirt. The skirt came off; revealing Jennifer's sexy red thong underwear and the entire incident was caught on tape. It was later dubbed "The most embarrassing moment ever shown on Australian television" by Australia's Nine Network. The wardrobe malfunction however, has made for an illustrious modeling career for Jennifer, who recently got hitched to her longtime partner Jake Wall.
