Indonesian car makers posted total sales of 225,413 units in the first quarter of the year, with Astra Motors cornering more than half of the total, media reports in Jakarta Saturday said.

The report did not provide comparative data but based on previously reported industry performance, the first-quarter 2011 total car sales reflected a growth of 29.5 percent from the year-ago level.

The 2011 first quarter growth rate also represented a marked slowdown from the 73.6 percent year-on-year sales surge in the same period last year, an analysis of the previously reported industry data shows.

Astra Motors, which produces Toyota, Daihatsu, Isuzu, Nissan Diesel and Peugeot cars in Indonesia, recorded total first-quarter 2011 sales of 125,442 units, an advance of nearly 27 percent from the year ago.

Combined sales posted by the other car companies, on the other hand, came to 69,354 units, a decline of 7.7 percent from the same period last year, a review of published data showed.

Sales of Suzuki and Honda cars increased to 21,448 and 13,679 units respectively, while that of Mitsubishi declined to 34,227 units, the reports indicated.

Within the Astra group, sales of Toyota cars led with 85,426 units, while Daihatsu chalked up 32,734 units, said the Jakarta Post report quoting Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers Association data.
