In eight episodes of "Downton Abbey" Season 5, Lady Mary did not get engaged or found a suitable match. She spent a few days with Lord Gillingham in a hotel room in Liverpool. They spent a considerable time between the sheets. After this secret passionate getaway, Lord Gillingham was sure about marrying Mary. However, Mary felt that they are ill-matched and that they do not have a lot in common. Charles Blake and Mary teamed up to make an adamant Lord Gillingham realise that Mary is not interested in him. Lord Gillingham got engaged to Mabel Lane Fox. And, Mary did not end up with Blake, either. This keeps open the door for another suitor to arrive.

The Christmas special episode will see Matthew Goode making an appearance as Mary's love interest. TV Line has confirmed the report, saying "Girlfriend's dance card overfloweth!." The actor has signed on to guest star in one episode but there is a possibility that he will return to star in Season 6. As previously reported, "Downton Abbey" has been renewed for Season 6.

According to TV Line's report, the producers of this British period drama are interested in roping in Goode for "Downton Abbey" Season 6, which is expected to begin filming next year. However, it depends upon his "The Good Wife" acting duty. If ""The Good Wife" picks up his contract option for Season 7, he pretty much has to return to "The Good Wife," according to TV Line.

Julian Fellowes has written the Christmas special episode and it is scheduled to air on Dec. 25. This episode is going to feature George Clooney as an American business man and he will be seen kissing Violet.
