The epitome of a great actor is that he embodies the role that he takes on and there are many of these actors that actually try to embody and turn into the character they are acting.

Of the many actors that have done it, some people would still be shocked how these method actors actually take on the roles and change their entire body to be able to show their audience that they are watching the "real thing" almost.

Recently, Jake Gydenhall surprised viewers and fellow actors at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards where the actor showed up looking rather "hungry" and "gaunt" in appearance. He had lost almost a shocking 20lbs in order to play a role in "Nightcrawler". Although it makes that movie more realistic, people couldn't help but notice how shockingly different the actor looked after his drastic weight loss.

There are many other actors that have decided to lose weight for their roles; Anne Hathaway had lost a lot of weight to play the role of "Fantine" in "Les Miserables".

Christian Bale is famous for his weight and character transformations especially his epic weight drop in "The Machinist" where he looked barely unrecognizable.

Oscar winning actor, Tom Hanks has also gone through drastic weight changes for roles. A rather popular role is in the movie "Castaway" where Hanks certainly looks different after playing the role of a lone survivor on a deserted Island.

Charlize Theron as well had changed her look in order to play a role where she gained a considerable amount of weight in the movie "Monster" where the actress gained 30lbs and it also won her a best actress Oscar.

Brad Pitt and other actors have certainly trained and lost weight or gotten buff for their roles. This is just something that these actors want their audience to experience where they show their passion for acting.
