More than 27,000 senior citizens from Onondaga County in the state of New York are set to receive one-time stimulus payments worth $200 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation.

Onondaga County legislators on Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of sending out the $200 stimulus checks to senior citizens as part of the Senior Household Stimulus Program proposed by county executive Ryan McMahon. The program will be financed using the county’s fund balance and is estimated to cost a total of $5.5 million.

County legislators believe approximately 27,500 county senior citizens would qualify for the Enhanced School Tax Relief (STAR) property tax exemption and receive the $200 checks at the end of the year. To be eligible for the Enhanced STAR, an individual should be a homeowner and at least 65-year-old and be in a household with an income of not more than $92,000 per year.

Onondaga County’s stimulus check comes as Americans grapple with the rising cost of goods and significant inflation caused by supply chain issues and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Despite rising prices, the federal government has yet to indicate any plans to send out more payments, leading individual states to create legislation to distribute more checks.

In California, residents are expected to receive a new round of inflation checks by October. One-time $350 checks will be sent to single taxpayers earning less than $75,000 annually and couples filing jointly making under $150,000 a year. Taxpayers with dependents will receive an extra $350.

The state will also send $250 checks to single taxpayers making between $75,000 and $125,000 a year and couples earning between $150,000 and $250,000. Single taxpayers earning between $125,000 and $250,000 and couples making between $250,000 and $500,000 will receive $200 in relief payments.

In Colorado, Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill in late May that would send at least $400 checks to taxpayers through direct deposit or paper checks by August or September. The payments would be sent to full-time residents who filed their 2021 tax returns by May 31, 2022. The state believes at least 3.1 million people will be eligible to receive the payments.
